Coax TV or Antenna Workaround

If you choose to keep your coax input (the facility provides a tv hookup to the room but no settop box) or antenna, look for this TV Setting

Updated over a week ago

If you are trying to get ONSCREEN to return to TV programming after a call and have a coax cable connected to the TV, this article shows you a workaround requiring limited ability. It depends on the TV's settings, so you will be using the TV remote throughout.

Remember, the best option is to have the TV Programs coming into the TV via HDMI cable. Then use the Passthrough configuration or the HDMI-CEC switching configurations. See our articles on How to Install with Cable, Satellite, or Streaming device via HDMI.

Overview:

We're going to set the TV to always turn on and show the input from the coax cable. At the end of a call, the caller should always choose "Hangup and turn remote TV off" from the options for ending a call. Then your loved one should use the TV remote to turn the TV on, and it will come on back to the show they had been watching. The loved one will need to be able to use the TV remote to turn the TV on and off.

Setup:

Using the TV remote, we're going to look for the setting for Power On behavior. This shows a Roku based TV and the menus are almost identical from one brand to another. Many TV manufacturers use Roku as an operating system for all or some of their models including:

  • TCL

  • Hisense

  • Roku

  • Westinghouse

  • ONn

  • Sharp

If your TV is not Roku, look for a similar setting or call your TV support to find out how to set the TV to power on to the built in TV tuner (coax input).

On Roku, go to HOME > SETTINGS > SYSTEM > POWER > Power on

You should see a screen like this:
โ€‹

Choose Live TV. Exit out of the TV Settings.

Now when your call ends and ONSCREEN turns the TV off, it is ready to return to programming when it comes back on.
