Step by step instructions for installing the ONSCREEN Joy tablet app paired with the ONSCREEN Family app

Updated over 2 weeks ago

For a quick introduction to our new app, please watch the video below.

Before You Begin – Understanding Roles

  • Care Receiver – The ONSCREEN Joy tablet app is designed to be installed on an iPad or Android tablet dedicated to providing care, companionship, and connection for an individual we refer to as the Care Receiver. This is typically an older adult, often a parent or in-law of the person setting up the app.

  • Caregiver – The app is usually installed on behalf of the Care Receiver by a Caregiver, who is responsible for managing the setup and ensuring seamless communication.

  • Favorites – These are trusted family members or friends invited to call and connect with the Care Receiver.

Getting Started

Once the ONSCREEN Joy tablet app is installed on the Care Receiver’s tablet, the Caregiver should install the ONSCREEN Family app on their own mobile device or a separate tablet. The Caregiver can then invite other family members or trusted friends as Favorites to stay connected with the Care Receiver.

Step 1: Install the ONSCREEN Joy app

You will be installing the "ONSCREEN Joy" app on the tablet you are leaving with your loved one.

On an iPad, go to the App Store and on Android tablets go to the Play Store.

Search for "ONSCREEN Joy" and install the app showing our the following logo:

Once you have installed the app, and open it, you will see the choice to enter as a New User (Sign Up). This is where you begin.

Step 2: Create an account

As the caregiver, you will put your information (Email and Password) at the top and your loved ones' information (Name) at the bottom.

Age and gender are optional, but useful for our platform.

Here's an example for the following two people:

Kathy Bolger will be the Caregiver of Mom Bolger.

Mom Bolger will keep this iPad in her living room where she can see it most of the time.

Mom Bolger doesn't need a login or password.

After completing the initial account creation, the screen will advance to this next screen.

Step 3: Grant permissions

We will walk you through granting permissions so we can

  • Allow video calls (camera and microphone)

  • Allow incoming calls to notify you a call is coming (Notifications)

  • Use voice recognition so you can talk to our AI Companion

Each request has our explanation with an "Enable" button.

Click the "Enable" button and you'll see an appropriate pop up to actually grant the permission.

Pop-ups will look like this. Tap "Allow" and it will move on to next one.

At this point, the tablet app is installed and setup is complete on the iPad/Android tablet and you'll see that you (the Caregiver) should now switch to your mobile phone.

We'll set you up on your mobile phone in the next section.

Step 4: ONSCREEN Family App - for Caregivers

To call the ONSCREEN Joy tablet app, Caregivers and Favorites use the ONSCREEN Family app.

On the Caregiver's mobile device, check your email for a new email from ONSCREEN. This will have been sent to the email address you used in Step 2 above.

Find the email similar to this and use one of the links (one for Apple, one for Android), to go directly to the App Store or Google Play.

Install the app on your phone.

When the app finishes installing, click "Open"

Here, you're already set up as a user, so Log In using the email and password you set up in Step 2.

If you don't remember your email, use the "Forgot your password?" link to reset it.

You'll be asked for the permissions here too.

This is to give the phone the permissions as well as the tablet.

After looking at our introductory app tour and pointers, you're all set!

And since you've set up your app, the tablet will recognize that set-up is complete and the warning message will dissappear and look like this:

Congratulations! You are now set up to use ONSCREEN to stay connected, provide companionship to your loved one and provide care from afar when they need it.

From here, your next steps are

  • Try "Chat with Joy" and have your loved one talk about their favorite topics or hear a joke

  • Make a video call to see how the automatic answering gives them confidence in the technology

  • Send them a message (including a photo from your phone) so they can start building their album

  • Invite other family members to get the free ONSCREEN app and stay in touch

Important Final Steps:

  1. We highly recommend that you put the Care Receiver tablet on a stand or some kind of support so that it's always facing the room where your loved one spends a lot of time. The stand will provide a nice aesthetic for when it's in Picture Frame mode.

  2. Ensure that the tablet is always plugged in so that it doesn't run out of battery.

  3. Follow these 2 articles to learn how to ensure that the ONSCREEN Joy app is not closed or moved away:

If you need any assistance, please don't hesitate to contact us via our standard support channels, or use the Help option in both the Joy and Family apps. Thank you for being a valued customer!
