Calling Joy: How Inbound Calls Work

Joy Calls allows your loved one to call Joy anytime, not just receive calls from her. Below is a quick explanation of how inbound calling works and what to expect.

Updated over 3 weeks ago

What is inbound calling?

Inbound calling means your loved one can call Joy whenever they want, instead of waiting for a scheduled or outgoing call.

Joy will answer and continue the conversation naturally.

What number should be used to call Joy?

Your loved one should call Joy using the same phone number Joy calls from:

+1 (415) 569-2439

We strongly recommend saving this number to their phone contacts as “Joy.” This makes it easier to recognize Joy and call her whenever they’d like.

You can find step-by-step instructions here:

Once saved, calling Joy works just like calling a familiar person.

Who can call Joy?

Inbound calling works for:

  • Registered Joy Calls users

  • Unregistered callers (people who have not signed up yet)

No menus, scheduling, or setup is required to place a call.

Will Joy remember who is calling?

Yes.

Joy recognizes callers based on the phone number they are calling from.

  • If the caller is registered, Joy remembers their profile, preferences, and past conversations.

  • If the caller is not registered, Joy will still recognize them on future calls as long as they call from the same phone number.

What’s the difference between registered and unregistered callers?

Joy can remember and recognize both, but there are differences.

Unregistered callers

  • Recognized by phone number

  • Conversations feel continuous

  • Memory is more limited over time

Registered users

  • Joy remembers family, interests, hobbies, and preferences more reliably

  • Conversations feel more personal over time

  • Long-term context is better preserved

For the best experience, signing up for Joy Calls is recommended.

Does inbound calling cost extra?

No.

Inbound calling is included as part of the Joy Calls experience and does not cost extra on its own.

The experience may vary depending on whether your loved one is on the Free or Premium plan, but inbound calling itself is available without an additional charge.

A note about Caller ID and anonymous calls

For inbound calling to work, Caller ID needs to be turned on.

If your loved one calls from an anonymous or blocked number, Joy won’t be able to recognize the call and won’t be able to answer. Calling from a regular phone number with Caller ID enabled ensures Joy can recognize who’s calling and respond correctly.

Does Joy behave differently on inbound calls?

No.

Joy behaves the same way whether:

  • She calls your loved one, or

  • Your loved one calls her

Her voice, personality, and conversational style remain the same.

Will inbound calls appear in call history?

Yes.

Inbound and outbound calls are clearly labeled in the call history so caregivers can easily see who initiated each call.

Do caregivers need to do anything?

No action is required.

Joy will gently introduce inbound calling to your loved one during conversation, so it feels natural and not overwhelming.
